Zijn wij, Belgen, emigranten geweest? Bepaalde bladzijden uit onze geschiedenis lijken vergeten. Wie weet nog dat in de 16de eeuw de helft van de Antwerpse bevolking vluchtte voor het geweld van de godsdienstoorlogen? Wie weet nog dat 1,3 miljoen Belgen (20% van de bevolking) ons land in 1914 ontvluchtte - vooral naar Nederland - op zoek naar bescherming tegen de oorlog en de bezetting? Wie herinnert zich die Luxemburgers uit de 18de eeuw die met hun karren naar Oost-Europa emigreerden op zoek naar landbouwgronden? Weet men dat in 1900 een groot deel van de dienstmeiden in Parijs uit België kwamen? Dat in de 19de eeuw mensen uit Wallonië - slachtoffers van een "filière" van hun burgemeester - 300 km aflegden over het bevroren Michigan-meer op zoek naar de beloofde landbouwgronden in Wisconsin? Many of the traditions which we think of as very ancient in their origins were not in fact sanctioned by long usage over the centuries, but were invented comparatively recently. This book explores examples of this process of invention - the creation of Welsh and Scottish 'national culture'; the elaboration of British royal rituals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the origins of imperial rituals in British India and Africa; and the attempts by radical movements to develop counter-traditions of their own. It addresses the complex interaction of past and present, bringing together historians and anthropologists in a fascinating study of ritual and symbolism which poses new questions for the understanding of our history.
